Sheffield Wednesday midfielder Barry Bannan is poised to sign a new deal at the club, according to Yorkshire Live.

Bannan has been a great servant for Wednesday since arriving from Crystal Palace for 2015, scoring 13 goals and registering 38 assists across 241 appearances for the Owls.

This season, the 31-year-old has started every single league game for the Owls, scoring two goals and registering four assists in 29 league outings.

His current contract at Hillsborough is set to expire at the end of the season, though, with talks over a new deal failing to materialise until now.

According to Yorkshire Live, Bannan has reached an agreement in principle regarding a new deal at Hillsborough, with the Scotland international set to extend his stay at Hillsborough.

This will come as a great relief for Sheffield Wednesday fans, who look set to see Liam Shaw depart for Celtic at the end of the season after reaching a pre-contract agreement with the Glasgow outfit.

The Verdict

Barry Bannan is a hugely important player for Sheffield Wednesday who offers so much in midfield.

His quality on the ball is brilliant, and he is also a leader which every side needs in the middle of the park.

Regardless of whatever division Wednesday are in next season, they need Bannan as a key part of their plans going forward. He may be 31, but he is still one of their best players, and it would have been a blow to lose him.
