Sheffield Wednesday’s newest addition Jacob Butterfield has admitted to the club site that he “jumped at the chance” to join the club when he heard a deal was on the table.

The 27-year-old is spending this season on loan at Hillsborough as a part of a deal that has seen Sheffield Wednesday striker Sam Winnall join Derby for the 2017/18 campaign.

The centre-midfielder featured 40 times in the league for the Rams last season as Derby finished a respectable ninth place, 13 points off the playoffs.

In his interview with Sheffield Wednesday’s official website Butterfield claimed that it was Wednesday’s style of football that convinced him to make the move.

The Englishman has spent most of his career playing at Championship level with 268 total appearances in the competition for a host of different clubs.

The Verdict

This deal just made sense for both clubs.

Derby had an abundance of midfielders and needed a striker and Sam Winnall wasn’t producing the good at Wednesday, who could have used more legs in the centre of the park.

A win, win for all involved.

Wednesday fans will be glad to hear that Butterfield really did want the move as opposed to feeling like it was his only choice.

He knows the Championship like the back of his hand and if nothing else, will add some reliable experience to the squad.
