Sheffield Wednesday have taken Okera Simmonds on trial as they consider offering the youngster a deal.

The 20-year-old, who has played for Accrington, Blackburn and Premier League champions Liverpool over the years, is currently training with Lee Bullen's U23 side as he tries to earn a contract.

Capable of playing in various forward positions, the youngster featured for the Owls development side as they were beaten by Birmingham City last week and despite the result, he impressed.

Therefore, the Sheffield Star have revealed that Simmonds has continued to train with the club and he is expected to play another game for the U23 side this week. After that, it's expected that the club will make a decision on whether to offer the player a contract.

If a deal does go through it would be expected that Simmonds would continue with Bullen's side initially but he would hope to force his way into Garry Monk's plans moving forward.

As he would be joining on a free, there is no rush for Wednesday to complete this deal before Friday's domestic transfer deadline.

Quiz: Do Sheffield Wednesday and Sheffield United have these 10 things in common?

The verdict

The Owls have been looking to strengthen their options for the development side in recent months and this would be the latest new addition on that front.

Simmonds clearly has pedigree when you look at the clubs he has been at but for whatever reason he has yet to make a big impact at first-team level.

So, it make sense to assess the player first and it will be down to the coaches to make the call on whether Simmonds deserves a deal.
