Sheffield Wednesday midfielder Barry Bannan has promised fans that the season won't be allowed to 'fizzle out' despite the Owls having little to play for.

Any relegation fears have gone after back-to-back victories left Jos Luhukay's men ten points clear of the bottom three with just seven games to play.

With the play-offs also completely out of the question, the former Gladbach boss will already be thinking about next season.

However, Bannan told the Sheffield Star that the team are determined to end the campaign in style, particularly as many of the injured players are beginning to return.

"It would be easy to let the season fizzle out as if there was nothing to play for but the players we have in there, there's a lot of hunger in that changing room. Players who are coming back, who have missed a lot of the season, they don't want the season to end, I don't want the season to end."

Wednesday travel to lowly Sunderland this afternoon, where they will be looking to secure a third successive win for the first time this season.

The Verdict

It's easy to lose that little bit of intensity at this stage of the season if you have little to play for and Wednesday fans will hope it doesn't happen to them.

As Bannan says, the fact a lot of players are coming back from injury will help as they will just want to play football, whilst everyone will know they are playing for their future too.

It's been an awful year for the Owls but a good end to the season could lift the mood around Hillsborough ahead of what will be a big summer.
