It's been a frustrating season for Sheffield Wednesday, who continue to struggle in the Championship since the turn of the New Year.

The Owls had previously occupied a spot in the play-off positions, but a dismal run of results which has seen them win just once in their last ten matches, sees Garry Monk's side sat 15th in the second tier standings.

However, recent off-the-field events have called an abrupt halt to fixtures across the globe, with no scheduled return date in place for UK fixtures at this moment in time.

This has led to uncertainty questions being raised as to what the future holds for players that were due to be out-of-contract when the season was due to originally reach a conclusion.

One Sheffield Wednesday player that is out-of-contract in the summer is midfielder Joey Pelupessy, who has been with the club since 2018.

Speaking in an interview with the Yorkshire Post, Pelupessy revealed that any potential talks over a new deal at Hillsborough have stalled due to the off-the-field crisis sweeping across the globe.

"To have had (contract) talks by now was the plan but it’s been a bit quiet since this crisis. We had (initial) conversations but not much (was said at that stage) and before they could really get going, it (the pandemic) had started. They’ve stopped now because no one knows what’s going to happen.

"When we get back to training I think the conversations will start again. Maybe it’s too soon now. But I hope we can agree something because if the contract is finished and the season is back on, you cannot play."

The 26-year-old went on to admit that he is keen to extend his stay with the Owls, and praised his team-mates, as well as manager Garry Monk.

He also labelled Sheffield Wednesday as a 'massive club', which is certain to go down well with the club's supporters, who have endured a tricky few seasons in the Championship.

"I’d really like to stay because Sheffield Wednesday are a massive club. I could smell from the first day they really wanted promotion.

"We’ve a nice team, nice players and the manager (Garry Monk) is a nice guy. If I can stay I would be really happy about that. England is a beautiful country to play in. For a lot of players from outside it’s a dream to play in England."

The Verdict:

His future is likely to remain uncertain for the coming weeks.

Pelupessy has been a solid addition to the Sheffield Wednesday squad since he arrived at Hillsborough, but he's not featured as much as he would have liked to this season for the Owls.

The likes of Barry Bannan and Massimo Luongo are likely to be ahead of him in the pecking order in Garry Monk's squad at the moment, so they could be tempted to move Pelupessy on in the summer.

He'll know that he has to perform to the highest of standards in the final nine games of the Championship season if/when football does return, as he's fighting for his future.
