Sheffield Wednesday got their season back on track with a resounding victory over Leeds on Sunday, but it can’t detract from their inconsistent start.
The Owls are 12th in the league after a mixed first eleven games but are only four points off the play-offs.
However, manager Carlos Carvalhal feels that his side deserve to be higher in the table.
“We are not in the position we think we should be in. With the performances we have put in, we must have more points,” he said to the Sheffield Star.
Yet, Wednesday fans shouldn’t really be worrying yet if history is anything to go by.
Carvalhal is in his third full season in charge, having guided the Owls to successive play-off finishes in his previous two campaigns.
In his first season, Wednesday had exactly the same points total as they do at this stage of the season and last year they were just one point better off after eleven games.
So, despite the speculation that was building surrounding Carvalhal’s future, the Portuguese manager has improved on relatively slow starts before.
Wednesday’s performance against Leeds has to be the benchmark. They played excellent football and created a host of chances against a good team.
Whether or not they are in a false position is down to individual opinion, but they know the standard they have to reach now.
Given his past experiences, Carvalhal will remain calm and hope that history repeats itself with Wednesday pushing on as the season progresses to secure a top six place.
