Sheffield Wednesday defender David Agbontohoma has revealed that he is now aiming to make some more appearances at senior level for the club in the 2022/23 campaign after signing fresh terms.

As confirmed by the Owls' official website, Agbontohoma has extended his contract at Hillsborough.

The defender initially joined Wednesday on a trial last year and went on to impress in pre-season as he earned a deal with the League One outfit.

Whereas Agbontohoma was utilised predominantly at youth level in the previous campaign, he did feature on two occasions in the EFL Trophy for the Owls.

Having committed his future to Wednesday, it will be interesting to see whether the defender is able to capture manager Darren Moore's attention ahead of the new campaign.

The Owls are set to begin their quest for success on July 30th when they face Portsmouth in League One.

After suffering defeat at the hands of Sunderland in the play-offs earlier this year, Wednesday will be determined to make a positive start to the new term.

Making reference to his contract extension, Agbontohoma has admitted that he is delighted to have signed fresh terms and is now aiming to kick on.

Speaking to the club's website, the defender said: "I am delighted to get this done with the season ahead, and now I want to work towards getting in the first team.

"Ever since I first came on trial, I found the club very welcoming.

"The gaffer handed me my debut last season which was a good experience and I’m just trying to kick on from there.

"This season I’m going to get my head down and try to build up some more appearances."

The Verdict

When you consider that Wednesday will be able to turn to Dominic Iorfa, Michael Ihiekwe and Ben Heneghan for inspiration in the centre-back position, Agbontohoma may have to wait for the opportunity to impress in League One next season.

Whereas the aforementioned trio all possess a decent amount of experience at this level, Agbontohoma has yet to make his bow in this particular division.

By continuing to deliver the goods at youth level in the coming months, the defender could be selected to start in a cup competition by Moore.

When he is given the nod to feature again, Agbontohoma could potentially boost his chances of becoming a regular member of the club's match-day squad by producing an assured display.
