Achraf Lazaar has revealed that he is in talks with Sheffield Wednesday about making his loan move from Premier League side Newcastle United permanent.

The Moroccan defender has appeared four times since joining The Owls on loan until the end of the season in January, but that doesn't appear to have put either party off the idea of an extended stay at Hillsborough for the 27-year-old.

Speaking to Italian publication Tuttomercatoweb about his future, Lazaar revealed talks were underway between him and the Hillsborough club.

"Sheffield Wednesday would like to keep me, we're talking about it.

“I have a two-year contract with Newcastle, we'll see."

Lazaar has struggled for game time since joining Newcastle from Italian side Palermo in 2016, making just four substitute appearances for the St James' Park club in the Championship. He returned to Italy on loan with Benevento last season, where he made just nine appearances across the course of the campaign.

The Verdict

Given that Lazaar has struggled for playing time wherever he has been in recent years, it seems slightly strange that Sheffield Wednesday would be so keen to keep him.

That being said, he would appear to be surplus to requirements at Newcastle which may give The Owls the chance to get him at a cut price deal, which could be a useful thing for Wednesday given the recent scrutiny their financial situation has come under.

Injuries have played their part in his limited involvement at Hillsborough so far, and if he can put those problems behind him, he could prove to be a strong addition.
