Sheffield Wednesday's on-loan Newcastle United winger Jacob Murphy says he has no regrets about his decision to join the Owls on a temporary basis this season.

Murphy completed a season-long loan move to the Championship club on the final day of the summer transfer window, and has since gone onto make 35 appearances in all competitions for the Owls, scoring five goals.

As things stand, Wednesday are currently 15th in the second-tier standings, having won just two of their last 14 league games, although it seems that has not changed Murphy's view on his decision to make his move to Hillsborough in the summer.

Reflecting on the choice he made in joining Wednesday, and the impact that Owls boss Garry Monk has had on him in influencing his mentality during his time at the club, Murphy told the Yorkshire Evening Post: “I had a few calls (in the summer) but I decided this club was probably the best move for me, and I don’t regret it at all. It’s been great to represent this club.

“I have been working on aggression, getting my confidence back, these are things I have really been working on this season. Credit to Garry Monk, he has changed my mentality, he has helped me a lot.

“When we have meetings, he sends powerful messages, and they have sunk in. He gets me to see things from a different perspective.

“From him being here it has given me more of a hunger and fire in the belly. Every day I just want to work, work, work, I am starving to succeed."

But despite the fact that he does seem to be enjoying his time at Wednesday, Murphy does still appear to believe that his long-term future lies at Newcastle, as when discussing his aims for this loan spell, the winger revealed: “If I can get the outcomes I want from myself this season, it puts me in good stead going into the summer and into next season (at Newcastle).

“I want to regain that confidence and get back to that old Jacob Murphy, which did really well at Norwich, to get a move to the Premier League.

“That’s the kind of form I wanted to get back to. I feel from this loan, so far, I have achieved that, but I want more."

Murphy, who also spent part of last season on loan at West Brom, has so far made a total of 41 appearances in all competitions for Newcastle, scoring once, having joined them from Norwich back in the summer of 2017.

The Verdict

This is an interesting one.

Given the expectation there was on him, you can certainly understand why Murphy is keen to return to Newcastle, in order to prove himself at Premier League level.

That may however be something of a source os disappointment for Wednesday, given the fact that his recent impact for the club may have left some of those of an Owls persuasion hopeful of him extending his stay at Hillsborough.

There is of course plenty that must happen before the season ends and Murphy returns to Newcastle however, and it will be interesting to see if that changes anything with regards to the perspective of Murphy, or one of these two clubs that could impact the future of all three.
