Sheffield Wednesday forward Marco Matias claims the Owls are on the verge of becoming a 'great' side under Jos Luhukay.

The Yorkshire outfit have won four of their last six league games after a slow start, to ensure they are just two points outside the play-offs.

The latest victory, a 2-1 success against a talented Aston Villa side, was a big moment for the Owls and one of the goalscorers from that day, Matias, revealed his confidence in this team ahead of Friday's derby with Leeds.

"We are taking it step by step, game by game. The most important thing is just to focus on the next game. I hope we can achieve the three points against Leeds. We are building up a great team," he told the Sheffield Star.

After a tough few years at Hillsborough, with many injury issues, Matias is starting to get a run in the team and is showing what he is capable of with the strike at Villa Park his second in three games.

And, he is hoping to maintain that form heading into the clash with the Whites, although he wouldn't share his personal targets for the season.

"I want to keep my targets for me. The most important thing is the team. I'm happy to get fit. I hope I can keep going."

The Verdict

This is a very confident message from Matias and whilst some may think it's over the top, it's good to see the belief he has in this team.

After a tough first few games, things have changed dramatically for the Owls and everyone at the club deserves credit for that.

Now though, it's about the players backing up Matias' claim that they are a great team, starting with a victory on Friday in what should be a feisty derby game.
