According to a report by The Yorkshire Post, Sheffield Wednesday striker Steven Fletcher is a target for Panathinaikos.

Sheffield Wednesday are willing to sell Fletcher as they look to balance the books and comply with Financial Fair Play restrictions.

The Scotland international is wanted by Panathinaikos as the Greek heavyweights aim for a much better 2018/19 campaign.

Panathinaikos are normally a regular fixture in European football but finished 11th in the top division of Greek football last term.

Fletcher has been identified as a man who can lead the line for them and get them back towards the top of their league.

The 31-year-old scored three goals in 21 games last season in an injury blighted campaign and is now considered surplus to requirements at Hillsborough.

Fletcher started his career at Hibernian before spells with Burnley, Wolves, Sunderland, Marseille and Sheffield Wednesday.

For the Owls, he has netted 14 goals over two seasons and could now be set for the axe with Panathinaikos lurking.

The Verdict

Fletcher has his strengths and if he stays fit, he is a decent squad option for Sheffield Wednesday.

But given his age, his injury record and his lack of goals last term, it is wise that the Owls trim his wages from their bill.

At Panathinaikos, he could thrive and it is an exciting career opportunity for the veteran forward.
