Jos Luhukay took his Sheffield Wednesday side to Barnsley on Saturday lunchtime bereft of 14 first-team players but Atdhe Nuhiu's penalty meant they left Oakwell with a 1-1 draw.

Nuhiu's first half sp0t-kick was cancelled out by Oliver McBurnie's smart solo strike which means that they remain in 17th place in the Championship, six points clear of the dreaded relegation zone and means they are spared being sucked deeper into the relegation mire for another week.

There is still that possibility that the Owls will get sucked into the relegation mire and that has led to some early question marks over Luhukay's ability to turn the club's fortunes around but Nuhiu was emphatic in his support for the man in the Hillsborough hotseat.

He told the Sheffield Star: "We need to be patient. We were playing for two and a half years with one manager, and now with the new manager it’s not like he can use a switch to make everything different.

"Everyone in training is giving their best and we need to help the young players. Maybe one or two will use their opportunities to become a good player for the squad.

"Football is not easy. Hull City and Sunderland came from the Premier League and are near the bottom. The new manager is giving us as many options as possible.

"Jos hasn’t come here in an easy situation. It’s a very difficult situation. It’s not easy to come here and change things around straight away. We need to give him time to understand his philosophy."

The Verdict

Luhukay needs time and he needs to try and squeak through this season still in the Championship and build next season.

Using young players is a risk but it's one he has to take given how many injuries he has to contend with and he will hope that their hunger shines through.
