Sheffield Wednesday midfielder Josh Onomah has revealed his ambitions to play for Gareth Southgate's England side, report the Sheffield Star.

Derby County's Mason Mount was called up to the squad for the Three Lions' matches against Croatia and Spain this week and Onomah says that has given him hope of earning a call-up himself.

"It's always been my dream to play for England," Onomah said.

"When I see players my age doing it, it just makes me want to work harder and get there even quicker.

"It is something I hope to do in the future."

The 21-year-old has impressed in his short time at Hillsborough, making four league appearances since his arrival on loan from Tottenham Hotspur at the end of August, assisting two goals.

He spent last season on loan with Aston Villa where he made 37 appearances under Steve Bruce, scoring four times and assisting three more.

The Owls climbed into the playoff places in the Championship last weekend with an impressive 2-1 away win against Bristol City, meaning Jos Luhukay's side are now unbeaten in their last four league matches.

The verdict

It appears that Gareth Southgate doing something as simple, as including players from the Championship in his side could give the national side a significant boost for the future.

Players like Onomah now see they have a chance of achieving their dream, giving them an even bigger incentive to perform knowing the national team boss will actually consider them.

Mason Mount is the first to benefit but will definitely not be the last.
