Sheffield Wednesday goalkeeper Cameron Dawson has emerged as a transfer target for Derby County, Blackburn Rovers and Preston North End, with the Championship trio looking to swoop on the Owls in January.

Dawson is currently serving as back-up to Keiren Westwood within Garry Monk’s squad, which has limited him to only four Championship appearances this season.

And, with his contract running out at the end of the current campaign, the Sheffield Star report how Derby, Blackburn and Preston are all considering a January move for the goalkeeper, whilst Rangers also hold an interest.

At 24, Dawson is still relatively young in terms of a goalkeeper, but he’s gained plenty of experience within the Sheffield Wednesday first-team. He played as first choice under Jos Luhukay when Westwood was frozen out, making 22 appearances for the Owls.

And, as mentioned, he is now serving as Westwood’s back-up, which has seen him feature in four of the season’s 15 games so far.

His most recent spell in the side came in a double-header against Cardiff City and Stoke City, with Dawson impressing and helping Monk’s side pick up four points in two testing fixtures.

Westwood has retained the gloves since though, playing in the draw with Leeds United and defeat to Blackburn Rovers.

The Verdict

Dawson is a very good young goalkeeper and he is someone that the Owls aren’t going to want to lose – particularly to a rival in the Championship.

In terms of Derby, Blackburn and Preston, you can see why they like the goalkeeper; he’s building good experience at Hillsborough and looks ready to be a No.1 somewhere.

It’ll be interesting to see if he commits to the Owls or looks for a move in January.
