Sheffield Wednesday midfielder Barry Bannan claims there is no reason why the Owls cannot cause an upset when they face Premier League Everton in the third round of the Carabao Cup on Tuesday night.

Everton go into the game off the back of consecutive league defeats to Bournemouth and Sheffield United that have seen Marco Silva's side drop to 14th in the Premier League.

Bannan, however, is under no illusions as to the challenge the Merseyside club will pose, even if he does believe his side have the chance to cause an upset.

Speaking to The Star about the prospect of going up against Everton on Tuesday night, Bannan claimed: "Everton have got a lot of world-class players and we’ll respect them, but everybody wants to play the best in the country.

"Everton are a Premier League team everyone will want to play and show we can compete against teams like that."

Discussing the opportunities that the cup tie will give a number of squad players to make their mark, the midfielder continued: "For the young players who will be given a chance it’s good for them and their careers.

"It’s good for them to see how they progress or how far they’re off it."

Despite being open to that possibility of rotation, it seems Bannan still has his eyes firmly fixed on an upset, as the 29-year-old concluded: "It’s always good to beat a Premier League side and get a scalp under your belt."

In comparison to Everton's recent struggles, Wednesday have enjoyed a solid start to life under new manager Garry Monk, having taken four points from the 40-year-old's first two games in charge of the Owls.

The Verdict

I do agree with Bannan that his Wednesday side have an opportunity to surprise a few here.

Given their recent poor form, it does seem as though this is a good time to play Everton, particularly if Marco Silva chooses to rotate his side on Tuesday night.

Having enjoyed a promising start to life under Garry Monk, it does also seem as though this is a good time for Wednesday to be playing a side such as Everton when you look at this from their own perspective.

If they are able to overcome Everton, then you feel it could be a big lift for Wednesday's confidence as they go in search of a top-six spot in the Championship this season.
