Jack Hunt has warned his Sheffield Wednesday teammates that the club need to be looking over their shoulder, with a relegation battle in the Sky Bet Championship looming during the run-in.

Speaking to the Sheffield Star, Hunt has admitted that the Owls are stuck in bad habits and need to be wary, as they are fighting for survival in the Championship now.

Jos Luhukay’s side lost 4-2 to Aston Villa on Saturday afternoon – a result that piled the pressure on the Owls ahead of the final 12 fixtures of the Championship season.

Hunt gave his thoughts on Wednesday’s current position of 17th and the possibility of a relegation fight, the 27-year-old said: “I wouldn’t put it down to nervousness. I just think we are being sloppy and we are stuck in bad habits at the moment.

“We need to get out of it and get out of it fast. We need to look over our shoulders because we are in a relegation battle.

“No doubt about it. We are in the thick of it.”

Hunt completed 90 minutes of Saturday’s defeat to Villa, with the right wing-back making his 26th appearance of the season for the Owls.

Saturday’s disappointing defeat to Steve Bruce’s side left the Owls in 17th, just seven points above the relegation zone with 12 fixtures of the season remaining.

The Owls are back in Championship action on Saturday afternoon against play-off hopefuls Bristol City, but turn their attention to the FA Cup during the week, with Luhukay’s side facing Swansea City in a replay.

The Verdict

Hunt is extremely honest about Wednesday’s position in the Championship table, with the Owls really struggling to work their way out of a hole this season.

Of course, injuries to key players has really hindered Luhukay on his start in English football, and with a fully fit squad, you would doubt Wednesday would be in the position they find themselves in.

Right now, the Owls are in a relegation battle, but if Luhukay can get some players back in the coming months, his side should have too much quality to be considered serious contenders for relegation.
