Sheffield Wednesday midfielder Joey Pelupessy has suggested that he would be wanting to remain with the Owls beyond the end of the season.

Pelupessy’s current contract with the club runs out at the end of the campaign, and the midfielder has endured a largely inconsistent spell at Sheffield Wednesday since he arrived at the club in January 2018, making 17 appearances in the second half of the 2017/18 season and scoring one goal and providing one assist.

Last season the midfielder managed to establish himself as something of a regular in the side, especially under Jos Luhukay in the first half of the campaign, making 33 Championship appearances, but the 26-year-old has found his game time more limited this term under Garry Monk, having made just ten league appearances so far.

QUIZ: How much do you know about Sheffield Wednesday’s January signings?

Speaking to the Sheffield Star, Pelupessy suggested that he would be wanting to commit his long-term future to the club in the summer, were they to offer him a new contract to extend his time at the club beyond the end of the campaign.

He said: "In every interview here I've said I'm happy here, it's an amazing club. I know it now, two years ago when I came here I was looking thinking what is going on here.

"The fans are amazing. I'd really like to stay in England, 100 per cent.

"I haven't spoken with the club yet. Maybe my agent. I should say, but personally with my agent. I don't want to hear this (about contract negotiations), I only want to hear when something is really clear or when we know what is going to happen."

The verdict

These comments clearly show that Pelupessy remains content with life at Sheffield Wednesday, despite having not always been a regular in the side throughout the course of the season, but the midfielder has shown he can be relied on to keep himself in the right condition to feature when called up on.

The Owls will face an important decision in the summer over whether they are wanting to keep hold of the midfielder, who would likely only really be a squad player for Monk’s side as he has been largely throughout this season.

That means the Owls might be reluctant to offer him a new deal, with the club in need of bringing in some more quality in the midfield area, if they are going to be able to make any sort of challenge towards the top of the Championship table next term.

Therefore, Sheffield Wednesday might feel they are better off allowing Pelupessy to leave the club in the summer, but that could potentially change were the midfielder to deliver some strong performances for them between now and the end of the campaign.
