Sheffield Wednesday make move as they look to seal internal agreement with 30-y/o ace

Sheffield Wednesday are in advanced talks with Liam Palmer over a new contract at Hillsborough, according to Football Insider.

The defender’s current deal with the Owls is set to expire next summer and the League One outfit have been working hard to convince the 30-year-old to commit his future to the club.

After witnessing his side suffer relegation from the Championship earlier this year, Wednesday manager Darren Moore decided to part ways with a host of players ahead of the 2021/22 campaign.

Palmer was one of a number of individuals who remained at the club and he has since gone on to feature regularly for his side in the third-tier.

Utilised in several different positions by Moore in recent months, the Scotland international has made 16 appearances in all competitions for Wednesday this season.

Palmer will be hoping to help the Owls secure an immediate return to the second-tier in 2022 by delivering the goods on a consistent basis in League One.

Ahead of the club’s clash with Cheltenham Town this weekend, an update has emerged concerning Palmer’s future.

As reported by Football Insider, Wednesday are reportedly in advanced talks with the defender over a new long-term deal.

It is understood that the Owls are hoping that an agreement with Palmer will be formalised shortly.

The Verdict

If this report turns out to be true, it could be argued that this is a shrewd bit of business by Wednesday if they can convince Palmer to sign a new contract as he clearly possesses the talent needed to thrive at this level.

The defender knows exactly what it takes to succeed in the Football League as he has made a combined total of 323 appearances in the Championship and League One during his career to date.

Particularly impressive in Wednesday’s victory over Bolton Wanderers earlier this month, the defender managed to help his side keep a clean-sheet in this fixture by recording a WhoScored match rating of 7.40.

If he is able to replicate this display during the club’s upcoming clashes with Cheltenham and Sunderland, Palmer could potentially help his side seal maximum points in these games.
