Sheffield Wednesday have confirmed tonight that they have sacked manager Garry Monk.

The Owls have endured a tough start to the season but it was always going to be a difficult campaign after they were hit with a 12-point deduction.

However, that decision was halved earlier this month, meaning the Yorkshire side are second from bottom and sit on six points, just two from safety.

Despite the good news from the EFL appeal, and the fact they have picked up four points from their past two games, the club announced on Twitter this evening that they had parted company with Monk.

The pressure had been building on the ex-Birmingham chief prior to that though, as the side lost four successive games towards the end of October.

With the international break upon us, it gives owner Dejphon Chansiri almost two weeks to find a successor, with the Owls' next game against Preston North End at Deepdale on November 21.

Monk leaves having been in charge of Sheffield Wednesday for just over a year and he was publicly backed by Chansiri just four days ago.

The verdict

The timing of this decision is very strange considering Chansiri seemed to offer his support to Monk recently and they have got two decent results at home.

On the whole though, Monk can have few complaints. Results, particularly at Hillsborough, have been alarming and there doesn't appear to be a style of play with the team.

However, Chansiri needs to have a replacement lined up as the club must get out of the relegation zone as soon as possible and it will be interesting to see who comes in.
