Sheffield Wednesday have tied down starlet Bailey Cadamarteri to a first professional deal - fending off Premier League interest in the process.

The Owls had been in negotiations with the 17-year-old's representatives for weeks in a bid to secure his long-term future at Hillsborough, and they have finally come to an agreement.

Son of former Premier League forward Danny Cadamarteri, the teenager was featuring for Wednesday's under-23's team at the back end of the 2021-22 season, despite being just 17 years old, and has also trained with Darren Moore's senior squad.

Due to his performances for Wednesday's under-18's, Cadamarteri was courted by some Premier League outfits, with Manchester City, West Ham United and Brentford all linked with moves for the striker.

However, Cadamarteri has shown loyalty to the club he has been with since the age of eight and put pen-to-paper on his first ever professional deal, keeping him at the Owls for the next few years at the very least.

The Verdict

This is a positive step for Wednesday, who have seen a couple of young players depart at the end of their contracts in recent years - namely Liam Shaw and Osaze Urhoghide.

Whilst both players signed professional contracts initially, the Owls hierarchy will be hoping that it is different with Cadamarteri and he stays around for a number of years.

It feels unlikely that the forward will get his chance in the upcoming League One season to impress, simply due to the fact that the Owls have been linked with a number of strikers to bolster that department.

However, if Cadamarteri keeps impressing for the underage squads at the club, then his chance will come sooner rather than later.
