Sky Bet Championship side Sheffield Wednesday have announced that they have offered a deal to Sam Hutchinson following his release from Chelsea according to Sky Sports.

The 24-year old is set to leave the Premier League side at the end of the season having been told that he will not have his contract renewed in the summer.

He spent the later half of the season with the Owls, making 10 appearances and was sent off in two of those matches. His loan spell was successful though and Wednesday are attempting to make his stay permanent.

Hutchinson, who can also play in midfield, has had an unlucky career so far having been forced to retire to injury just a couple of years ago but he managed to make a heroic recovery and re-signed for Chelsea.

But since re-joining the club he has been sent out on various loan spells and hasn't been given much of a chance by the Premier League side.

Owls manager Stuart Gray told The Star, "Sam is available on a free. An offer has gone in for him. I think he's away on holiday with his family at the moment. The club is talking with his agent. I am keen to re-sign Sam.

"Any of the loan players we have taken have never been in anybody's first team, so I've had to bring them here and get them up to speed and match fit.

"It can backfire on you sometimes. We've put Wickham, Fryatt and even Barkley and Hutchinson into the shop window. It opens the door for other people.

"Any of the lads we have brought here, we've looked after them. We've done it right. I think they appreciate what we have done for them. Maybe the player will have some loyalty to the club; I don't know if the agents do."
