Sheffield Wednesday are looking to sign a centre-back before the deadline at the end of the month after their transfer embargo was lifted last week.

The Owls have endured an extremely tough summer with the restrictions placed on the club by the EFL meaning they have yet to sign anyone this summer.

However, it was revealed that the ban is now lifted, which will enable Jos Luhukay to bring in new faces before the loan window shuts at the end of August.

And, according to the Sheffield Star, the Owls are targeting a new centre-back as a priority in that time.

Supporters will surely welcome that news after a very tough start to the campaign that continued yesterday as they fell to a 2-0 defeat to Brentford.

Luhukay's men were very weak defensively and the two-goal margin was flattering to Wednesday for the way they played.

Speaking after the defeat at Griffin Park, the Owls boss didn't give much away when it came to transfers, although admitted they were on the lookout for new players.

"We will see what is possible. I can't give an answer now. It is too early."

The Verdict

Wednesday need several new players so this is welcome news for the fans and they are clearly weak defensively.

They have conceded six goals in three games, which is nowhere near good enough, and the reality is that it could've been a lot, lot more.

Whilst signing a centre-back won't solve all the problems with the Owls at the minute, it will be beneficial and they should look to finalise a deal for a centre-back as soon as possible.
