Sheffield Wednesday remain in discussions with Frederico Venancio over a permanent switch to the club, according to The Yorkshire Post.

Venancio spent last season on loan at Sheffield Wednesday from Portuguese side Vitoria de Setubal, playing 25 games and impressing the fans with his displays.

The centre-half is now in talks over a permanent move to Sheffield Wednesday, which could be for a cut-price fee.

Reports last month indicated that the Owls would only have to spend about £800k in transfer fees to land their man this summer.

This alerted a number of Championship clubs to Venancio's availability, including Yorkshire neighbours Leeds United.

The former Portugal under-21 international is believed to prefer a move back to Hillsborough and is expected to leave Setubal this summer.

The Portuguese top division club and Sheffield Wednesday are yet to come to an agreement yet but many Owls fans believe that Venancio will be Jos Luhukay's first signing of the summer transfer window to get the ball rolling.

However, Wednesday do need to sell a few players to trim their £25m wage bill and comply with Financial Fair Play regulations.

This might be holding the deal up.

The Verdict

Sheffield Wednesday need to get this deal over the line because it is a bargain price to pay for someone of Venancio's ability.

While he is not yet the finished article, towards the end of the season he was showing real signs of settling into life in England, establishing his place in the side and he is still relatively young with lots of potential to kick on.

If the Owls do not snap him up quickly, another club like Leeds will swoop.
