Sunderland were relegated to League One yesterday after losing to Burton Albion at home and they already face a battle to keep one of their midfielders at the club.

According to page 63 of the print edition of The Sun (April 22nd), Sheffield Wednesday want to sign George Honeyman from Sunderland this summer.

Honeyman has been one of Sunderland's standout performers this year in a poor season for the Black Cats.

Chris Coleman has already stated his desire to keep the likes of George Honeyman, Paddy McNair, Joel Asoro, Josh Maja and Lynden Gooch at the club in League One so that Sunderland have a core of players ready to battle for promotion.

But Honeyman is already attracting interest from the Championship with Sheffield Wednesday ready to pounce.

The 23-year-old, who plays as an attacking midfielder, has scored seven goals and added a further two assists in all competitions this season for Sunderland.

Honeyman has one year left to run on his Sunderland contract after this year and he could favour a move back to the Championship to further his career, although he will have to choose between that and maintaining his spot at local club Sunderland.

The Verdict

Honeyman is far from the finished article but he has enjoyed a successful breakthrough season in Sunderland's first team. He would be guaranteed games in League One for the Black Cats but a move to the Championship could further his career. It is a difficult choose for the 23-year-old to make.
