Sheffield Wednesday have made further steps to strengthen their side for the upcoming season, with Get French Football News reporting that they now are looking to Stade Laval defender Fouad Chafik.

The 28-year-old right back, a Moroccan international, is said to be attracting interest from the Championship side just over a month after making his debut for his national side.

Having only been with the French side for one campaign, it is clear his performances have done enough to impress not only his national side, but also the scouts from the Yorkshire club who appear yet to have made any more than an enquiry for the defender.

A full-back by trade, Wednesday will surely be hoping for a very reasonable asking price given the fact that Chafik has just one-year remaining on his current deal for his side that finished in eighth position in Ligue 2 last season.

A former defender, new Owls boss Carlos Carvalhal seems insistent on improving a defence which performed admirably during the 2014/15 season, conceding only 49 times in the 46 game season that saw them finish firmly in mid-table.

Having already signed Crystal Palace's Jack Hunt, Braga's Vincent Sasso, and Darryl Lachman of FC Twente, all defenders, and the interest in signing Chafik to bolster the back line, it would appear Carvalhal is keen to build his own squad to challenge at the top this season.

Whilst predominately a right-back, Chafik can operate across the whole back line, such an attribute that would surely be welcomed throughout the campaign in the face of injuries and suspensions and given the additions already made to the back line, should a deal be struck. Time will tell whether Wednesday's interest and enquiries materialise into a formal bid.
