Championship side Sheffield Wednesday are one of a number of clubs interested in signing centre back David Bates from German side Hamburg, Sun journalist Alan Nixon has reported.

Bates only joined Hamburg from Rangers last summer, and has made 28 appearances for the German second-tier side, although he has not featured in his side opening two league games of the current campaign.

Now it seems as though Bates could be on the move again, with Nixon reporting that there has been a 'flurry of interest' in the Scot, adding that Sheffield Wednesday are among those considering a move for the defender.

Wednesday have already signed one centre back this summer, with Julian Boerner joining from Hamburg's second-tier rivals Arminia Bielefeld. The Owls have also been linked with a late move for Michael Hector, who spent last season on loan at Hillsborough from Chelsea.

There are currently three years remaining on Bates' current contract with Hamburg, securing his future with the club until the summer of 2022.

The Verdict

This is an interesting one.

On the one hand, Bates' time with a club such as Rangers, and indeed Hamburg, does suggest that he would be a capable option for Wednesday this season.

However, with time running out and the club having already brought in one centre back with Boerner, you feel this could be an either/or situation with regards to Bates and Hector.

Given the impact Hector had at Hillsborough last season, you feel he would be the preferred option of many Wednesday fans, although you imagine the club would be better off getting Bates, than not signing anyone at all, if they do not get Hector over the line.
