Sheffield Wednesday remain locked in discussions with Vitoria de Setubal over the permanent signing of defender Frederico Venancio, according to The Yorkshire Post.

Venancio spent last season on loan at Sheffield Wednesday and impressed in the 25 games he played, convincing them to launch a permanent move for him.

Most fans expected this deal to be completed shortly into the summer window but they are still in talks over the transfer.

Setubal are willing to let the 25-year-old leave and they value him at £1.8m, although previous reports have suggested the would only cost the Owls £800k.

Venancio is one of Jos Luhukay's top targets for the summer transfer window as he tries to bolster his squad with a tight budget, given Financial Fair Play regulations.

Sheffield Wednesday are trying to shift players so that they can fund moves for their own new additions, like the Portuguese centre-back.

The Verdict

Sheffield Wednesday need to get this deal over the line because other clubs will be loitering and ready to poach him from under their noses.

In Venancio, they would have a proven centre-half who would immediately improve their defensive options and he is the right age to get better.

Venancio and Tom Lees as a centre-half partnership is the perfect solid foundation for the Owls.
