Sheffield Wednesday are reportedly leading the race to sign Everton striker Tom Cannon on loan this month.

According to journalist Alan Nixon, the Owls are in front of fellow League One sides Fleetwood Town and Oxford United in the queue for the highly-rated 20-year-old, with the prospect of being involved in a promotion race potentially a deciding factor as long as the Toffees can be convinced he will get significant game time at Hillsborough.

Cannon has already proven his abilities against Football League opponents this season with an incredibly prolific spell playing for Everton's U21 side in the EFL Trophy, scoring five goals and providing two assists in five appearances, including against League One outfits including Morecambe and Lincoln City, alerting the attention of many in the third tier.

His growing reputation has been enhanced further by the fact he has made two Premier League substitute appearances for the Toffees this season, the most recent of which came in the defeat at home to Wolves on Boxing Day.

The Owls are on the look out for a striker as they look to strengthen for their promotion push. While Wednesday do currently sit second in the league and secured an emphatic 5-0 win over struggling Cambridge United at Hillsborough on Monday, they have found goals hard to come by at times of late and have also seen a number of their front men suffer spells on the sidelines.

Josh Windass, who hit a hat-trick against the U's, and Michael Smith both have seven goals for the season and seem to have rediscovered their form, but Lee Gregory is currently injured, while Callum Paterson has never been a consistent scorer.

It is no secret that Moore is in the market for attacking reinforcements and after a long-standing interest in Cannon, they could be set to land their man.

The verdict

Cannon could be a very exciting signing for Wednesday.

He is clearly a player with huge potential and Frank Lampard must have a lot of faith in his abilities to trust him with minutes in the Toffees' Premier League relegation battle.

Moore has used the loan market to good effect this season, bringing in the likes of Mark McGuinness and Reece James and he will be hoping that Cannon could be the next successful temporary addition.

Cannon would add another dimension to Wednesday's attack and add some much-needed youthfulness and pace, which are not qualities that can be attributed to Smith or Gregory.

If he can continue the form he showed in the EFL Trophy earlier this season, he could prove to be an incredibly useful asset as the Owls look to hold on to their automatic promotion spot.
