Sky Bet Championship side Sheffield Wednesday are in the pole position to sign former Schalke 04 and Al-Jazira winger Jefferson Farfan, according to the Peruvian publication El Bocon.

Although the now 32-year-old winger last plied his trade in the UAE Arabian Gulf League with Al-Jazira, it has been reported that Farfan still has aspirations of returning to play in Europe.

Having spent eleven years playing in Europe for PSV Eindhoven in the Eredivisie and in the Bundesliga for Schalke 04, Farfan has shown he has the pedigree to play at the highest level.

The Peruvian international who has scored 22 times in 75 appearances for the La Blanquirroja would be a very low-cost, low-risk acquisition for Carlos Carvalhal to make.

Farfan is currently unattached after leaving Al-Jazira in November, although the 32-year-old is currently training in Peru, he has stated that his intention is not to return to his native country yet.

A number of English teams have shown an interest, however, it appears that at this moment in time, Sheffield Wednesday could potentially be Farfan's next destination.
