Frederico Venancio remains a top transfer target for Sheffield Wednesday and Jos Luhukay this summer.
According to a report in the Sheffield Star, the Owls are keen to strengthen their options at centre-back this summer, following the decision to not renew Glenn Loovens’ contract at Hillsborough over the summer.
Venancio is a major target, with Luhukay looking to bring the defender back to Hillsborough after he impressed last season whilst on-loan from Vitoria FC.
The 25-year-old made 25 appearances across all competitions for the Owls, including 20 in the Sky Bet Championship.
After a slow start to his loan spell, the centre-back began to excel under Luhukay towards the end of the season, with his form during the run-in particularly impressive.
For now, his final appearance for the Owls came in the 5-1 victory over Norwich City, with Venancio grabbing his first goal for the club in the rout.
After Loovens’ departure, Wednesday’s options at centre-back include Joost van Aken and Tom Lees.
Youngster, Jordan Thorniley, is another option for Luhukay ahead of the new season, whilst in Daniel Pudil, Wednesday have a left-back who featured as part of Luhukay’s three-man defence on occasion last season.
The Verdict
Luhukay needs to get some defenders through the door at Hillsborough, particularly if he is going to stick with his favoured 3-5-2 system.
Venancio would be the perfect option, after he impressed towards the end of last season at Hillsborough.
The 25-year-old took time to adapt to the Championship, but by May, he looked comfortable.
