Sheffield Wednesday have offered goalkeeper Keiren Westwood a new one-year deal at the club, though it may not be enough to keep him at Hillsborough beyond this season.

The experienced shot-stopper has endured a mixed season to say the least, failing to make a single appearance for the Owls for the best part of a year under former boss Jos Luhukay.

But the Republic of Ireland international has been a regular under Steve Bruce, making 21 appearances in the second-half of the campaign and showing his true quality in between the sticks.

Westwood is a real fans' favourite at Hillsborough having made over 160 appearances since signing from Sunderland in 2014, and reports from the Sun on Sunday (12/05, page 59) claim that the club have offered him a new one-year deal to keep him at the club beyond this season.

But, with his current deal set to expire at Hillsborough, the same report claims that Westwood is unhappy at the offer, and would like to be offered a two-year deal if he is to stay.

Westwood has recently been attracting the interest of fellow Yorkshire side Huddersfield Town, who are preparing for life in the Championship after their relegation from the top-flight, so it remains to be seen what the goalkeeper will do.

The Verdict

I think a two-year deal is the right offer for Westwood, as he has been such an important player for them over the last few years.

He may be 34 years of age, but he has proven since he has come back into the team that he is still a very good goalkeeper at this level.

The experience and leadership that he will provide behind-the-scenes is beneficial, and they need to do everything they can to keep him.
