Sheffield Wednesday have been handed a huge injury boost with the news that Joe Wildsmith has returned to training.

The Owls' goalkeeper has featured for the first team in over 18 months as a troublesome knee injury keeps him out of action.

Wildsmith missed the entirety of last season but looked set to return to action over the summer, only to suffer a setback in his recovery.

That meant that the 23-year-old has spent the first three months of this season sitting in the medical room.

However Sheffield Wednesday shared an update which will be good news for everyone associated with the South Yorkshire club.

While Joe Wildsmith will be delighted to be continuing his recovery on the training field, he certainly faces a difficult test if he's to work his way into the first team fold.

Wildsmith faces stern competition from Cameron Dawson and Keiren Westwood for the number one jersey, with the Irish stopper regarded as the first choice under Garry Monk.

The verdict

Joe Wildsmith's return to training is great news for the goalkeeper.

The 23-year-old has faced a torrid 18 months due to injury at a time when he would have fancied himself to establish himself as the club's first choice stopper.

If Wildsmith can prove his fitness, he'll be hoping to get an opportunity in the coming months to take the number one jersey away from Keiren Westwood.
