Sheffield Wednesday goalkeeper Cameron Dawson has revealed that there were moments where he questioned his long-term future at the club over the last few years, but he is now thrilled to be a key part of the side.

Dawson has been an integral figure for the Owls so far this campaign between the sticks making 17 appearances in the Championship so far, and although he has had to compete with Keiren Westwood at times for the number one position, the 24-year-old looks to be Wednesday’s long-term number one after signing a new deal recently.

The keeper has not always had such a vital role for the Owls, with the 24-year-old having seen himself behind both Westwood and Joe Wildsmith at times over the last few years, which could have left Dawson considering whether he would ever command a regular starting role for the club.

QUIZ: Can you remember the score from Sheffield Wednesday’s first 12 games of this season?

Speaking to the Yorkshire Post, Dawson revealed that he had considered the possibility of leaving the club in search of more regular game time in the past, but that he is now relishing life as a key figure between the sticks, saying: "The honest answer to that is yes, of course. It’s not always been plain sailing, there has been some tough times along the way.

"Times when I have had to go away and rebuild myself and come back.

"But the recent past, what has happened over the last few months, it would have been silly for me to throw that away.

"I am delighted to play for this football club, it’s a football club I have great affection towards."

The verdict

Dawson has unquestionably had to really show some fight to secure his long-term future at Sheffield Wednesday, with the keeper having at times been somewhat written off whilst he was effectively the club’s third choice keeper in recent seasons.

However, having been finally given a chance to really make a go at earning the club’s number one keeper position, whilst Westwood has been our injured in the last couple of seasons, Dawson has really shown his potential and quality for the Owls.

The 24-year-old delivered some excellent performances for the Owls last season in his 26 Championship appearances, and although he had to bide his time once again at the start of this season, the keeper has managed to once again show his quality starting the last 15 matches.

That has seen him deservedly rewarded with a new contract by the Owls, and where once he was considering his own future, it is now the club who will be needing to do all they can to ensure that he remains at the club over the next few years.
