Sheffield Wednesday goalkeeping coach Nicky Weaver has praised current Owls No.1 Cameron Dawson and backed the youngster to continue to improve.

Boss Jos Luhukay had a very tough decision to make ahead of the new season, with Dawson and fellow youngster Joe Wildsmith battling it out with the experienced Keiren Westwood to start.

And, it was Dawson who got the nod, after finishing last season as the Wednesday keeper. He has featured in the opening two games so far, impressing in Saturday's draw with Hull.

Speaking to the Sheffield Star, Weaver revealed that it was a big call for the manager but he thinks Dawson is a quality stopper - and will get better:

"It is always going to be tough whoever you pick because we have got three quality goalkeepers and only one can play.

"The manager made the decision to go with Cammy and I have got every faith in him, just as I have with the other two.

"But at the moment Cammy has got the jersey and I thought he did really well on Saturday. Hopefully he can grow into the shirt and keeps on doing well."

Dawson is likely to be replaced for Thursday's Carabao Cup fixture against Sunderland, however, he will hope to retain his place for the Brentford game at the weekend, as Luhukay's Owls go in search of their first three points following a testing start to the Championship season.

The Verdict

As Weaver says, Luhukay had a very tough decision to make at the start of the campaign as there are very good goalkeepers at Hillsborough.

However, you can see why he went with Dawson, who is young and could potentially be the first choice for years to come.

Now, it's down to the 23-year-old to prove the manager was right and deliver big performances in the upcoming campaign.
