Sheffield Wednesday goalkeeper Keiren Westwood has expressed his delight at making his return to football, his first taste of the season.

The Irishman has been missing with a groin injury but made his return in an under-23 fixture against Crewe Alexandra, playing the first 45 minutes, and he was clearly happy to be back.

"Delighted to get the gloves and boots on for 45 mins today," Westwood wrote on Twitter after the game.

"Last time [I] played at [the] Crewe training ground I was 17 for Man City u17’s.

"[The] Pitch was just as bad then as it is now."

The match finished 2-2 and Westwood will now have his sights set on a first first-team appearance since a year ago.

Since joining the club in, the 34-year-old has made 144 appearances, keeping 52 clean sheets.

A disappointing 2-2 draw with Rotherham United continued the Owls dismal run of form, leaving them with just one win in their last nine games.

They sit just six points above Reading, who currently occupy the final relegation spot, and Jos Luhukay will be starting to look nervously over his shoulder.

The Verdict

Cameron Dawson has been one of Wednesday's better players so far this season so to say they have missed Westwood would be an overstatement, but supporters have been wanting to see the goalkeeper return for some time now.

But at his best, the Irishman was one of the best shot-stoppers in the league and his presence back in the squad can only be a good thing.

The Owls have struggled badly with injuries so any increase in player competition can only be a good thing.
