Sheffield Wednesday's season petered out disappointingly at Loftus Road on Sunday as they were beaten 2-1 by QPR.

Josh Scowen gave the Rs the lead just before the half-hour mark, finishing smartly from the edge of the area following a Darnell Furlong cross, before Fernando Foriestieri blazed a 57th minute penalty high over the bar.

But, club's player of the season Michael Hector ensured that the same mistake was not made twice seven minutes from time, stepping up to convert after Marco Matias had been fouled in the area this time.

However, it would be the Rs who had the last laugh when Matt Smith finished emphatically two minutes into injury time after a Massimo Luongo cross.

It is a loss that means the Owls finish the season in 12th place and 24 points clear of the drop zone, marking a clear improvement since Bruce took over at the club.

After the game, it was announced that Matias, David Jones, Daniel Pudil, Gary Hooper, George Boyd and Almen Abdi were all to be released by the club.

But how should the fans feel about this decision?

It will be tough for them to say goodbye to the likes of Hooper and Mattias who have been good servants to the club, but they will all know it is the right thing to do.

Wednesday have had far too big a squad for too long now and if they are going to be successful that had to change.

This is a very good start to that process and the fans should be excited.
