While the rest of the football world are busy trying to secure last minute deals, Sheffield Wednesday are set to have a quiet deadline day.

Dom Howson of the Sheffield Star is reporting that the Championship side are set to make no signings on before Thursday’s 11pm cut-off.

Steve Bruce was appointed as Jos Luhukay’s replacement earlier this month but is yet to start work – with tomorrow set to be his first official day.

And Howson has said the new man wants to have a proper look at his squad between now and the end of the season before deciding on any personnel changes.

It has been a difficult campaign for the Owls who were under a transfer embargo for the majority of the summer, only able to sign players in the final few days of the window.

To now making no signings in January with Bruce adamant he wants to run the rule over his current crop of talent before deciding on their futures at the end of the season.

The verdict

This is news that will surely frustrate fans and wonder why they have a manager in charge that isn’t yet in charge, effectively nullify their chances of making signings this window.

You can understand Bruce’s reasoning behind it, but there is no reasoning with football fans, especially ones from a club with supremely partisan support.

It’s a blow for Wednesday but with a midtable finish looking likely, now is the time to

experiment and allow Bruce time to sound out his squad ahead of a major rebuild in the summer.
