Sky Bet Championship Sheffield Wednesday are keeping tabs on Celtic striker Anthony Stokes, a club insider from the Championship club has informed FLW.
The 26-year-old has been told by the Glasgow club that he is free to leave this summer following the signing of Dundee United striker Nadir Ciftci.
Celtic boss Ronny Deila is keen to move on some of the fringe players during the close season with Stokes being one of them.
A number of English clubs are understood to be interested in the former Sunderland man with Hull City, Bolton Wanderers, Leeds United and Wigan Athletic also shown an interest in the past.
Wednesday are looking to challenge for a top six finish this coming season and are keen to add some fire power to their squad after being one of the lowest scorers in the Championship last year.
Stokes was a regular in the Celtic side until falling out of favour under Deila and made 21 appearances in the league last season, scoring seven goals.
The campaign prior had seen the striker score 21 goals in 47 appearances in all competitions.
He may be available at a cut-down price given he is surplus to requirements at Celtic Park.
Wigan boss Gary Caldwell is hoping to persuade Stokes to join him at the DW Stadium but it is unlikely that he will be willing to play in the English third tier.
Leeds may now withdraw from the race after splashing out to bring Chris Wood to Elland Road and has also recruited another forward in Lee Erwin from fellow Scottish outfit Motherwell.
Bolton have little money to spend which could rule them out while Hull are waiting to offload Abel Hernandez, Dame N’Doye and Nikica Jelavic first before moving in the transfer market.
Wednesday have money to spend after being taken over by Thai businessman Dejphon Chansiri in March and have signed six players so far this summer.
