Sheffield Wednesday eyeing 26-year-old striker

Jos Luhukay will be wanting to make his mark on the team this summer through new personnel.

Joao Amaral is a summer target for the Owls, according to O Jogo, via Sports Witness.

The 26-year-old had his best season in the Portuguese top flight because he scored nine goals and assisted two in 33 games for Vitoria Setubal, which earned him a move to Benfica.

However, they appear willing to move him out on loan.

His goals helped Setubal avoid relegation with a 14th place finish and a two-point gap on the relegation places. In contrast, Wednesday finished 16 points away from danger in 15th place, but it was still hugely disappointing because they were aiming to finish in the top six.

The Verdict

Amaral would fill a couple of needs in the squad because he can play behind a striker or on the wing, which Wednesday need more options in.

Fernando Forestieri is a strong first option to have as a shadow striker or attacking midfielder, but they lack someone else to rotate in for him. It’s the same on the wings where George Boyd, Adam Reach and the young Jack Stobbs are the main options.

The only issue is whether he would be able to translate his form across to England. However, Frederico Venancio was a good acquisition for the club from Portugal, so there is no reason to suggest that Amaral couldn’t have the same success.
