Sheffield Wednesday are plotting a move for AFC Wimbledon striker Joe Pigott, according to the Mirror (15/07, 14:49).

The Owls are reportedly keen to capitalise on Reading's failure to get a deal over line by making a late swoop for the prolific frontman, who was one of AFC Wimbledon's key men last term.

It is understood that Wimbledon would want Wednesday to pay a fee in the region of £250,000 to land Pigott, who scored a total of 18 goals in his 48 appearances for the Dons last season.

He was a regular feature in Wally Downes' side, as they escaped the threat of relegation from League One after embarking on a memorable run to the FA Cup fifth round in an eventful campaign.

Wednesday are now thought to be interested in landing Pigott's services, despite manager Steve Bruce standing on the verge of joining Newcastle United after the Magpies reportedly paid a £4million compensation fee on Monday morning.

The Verdict

Pigott was playing in a struggling League One side last season, so it is testament to his goalscoring qualities that he managed to find the net on 18 occasions.

I think he would be a decent addition to Wednesday that would add depth to their frontline, but there are question marks surrounding whether he can cut it as a regular Championship striker.

I also feel it would be a strange move for the Owls to sign him before they have appointed Bruce's successor. It would surely make sense for the new manager to be consulted regarding this potential signing, and I would expect this to happen.

At £250,000, Pigott would be a low-cost option for the Owls which should suit them given their financial difficulties. This also means it is a low-risk move, so I think they should take the plunge.
