Sheffield Wednesday are interested in signing Nick Powell from Wigan Athletic, with the Owls rivalling Stoke City for the service of the playmaker who is soon to be out of contract.

Powell’s future has been up in the air for some time now, and it looks like he will be departing Wigan after three years at the DW Stadium.

According to the Sun, the 25-year-old has turned down a £1m-a-year deal with the Latics, which has alerted their Championship rivals.

It has been reported elsewhere that Stoke City are closing in on Powell, but the Sun confirm that Steve Bruce has the former Man United man on his radar at Sheffield Wednesday.

During his time with Wigan, Powell has shone in both the Championship and League One, as the club bounced between the two divisions.

On Wigan’s return to the second-tier last season, Powell struck eight goals and assisted a further six for the Latics despite their lowly position in the table and his own struggles with injuries.

Powell has also attracted interest from Celtic and Rangers, but it is thought that the player will opt to stay in England.

The Verdict

This is interesting as Sheffield Wednesday could really do with a player like Powell.

They do have creative outlets, but Powell – on his day – is exceptional and could really help Bruce get Wednesday in play-off contention.

He’s got plenty of goals in him and if he stays fully fit, he’s a shrewd signing on a free.
