Sheffield Wednesday defender Matt Penney's future at the club continues to remain unclear heading towards the summer transfer window.

Penney made 17 appearances for the Owls last season, as they finished 12th in the second tier standings under the management of Jos Luhukay and Steve Bruce at different stages of the season.

The full-back was sent out on loan to German side FC St. Pauli during the summer of 2019 though, and has gone on to make 13 appearances for the club to date.

Penney is out-of-contract at the end of this year's campaign with Sheffield Wednesday though, and Yorkshire Live have reported that the defender's future with Garry Monk's side remains unclear, with no new contract offer on the table as of yet.

Sheffield Wednesday are currently sat 15th in the Championship table, which will be frustrating for the club's supporters after they had previously occupied a spot in the play-off places.

The Owls have won just once in their last ten matches in all competitions, which has seen them fall down the second tier standings at an alarming rate.

However, due to recent off-the-field events, all fixtures across the EFL have been called to an abrupt halt, with no scheduled return date in place as of yet for competitive action to get back underway.

The Verdict:

I think he deserves a contract extension.

Penney didn't exactly look out of place in the Sheffield Wednesday team last season when he was involved, and I'll admit that I was surprised to see him head out on loan earlier this term.

He has age on his side, and I think he's more than capable of challenging for a spot in Garry Monk's starting XI ahead of next year's campaign.
