Sheffield Wednesday continue to run the rule over Okera Simmonds, with the forward hoping to win himself a contract with the Sky Bet Championship side.

Simmonds is a Liverpool player, but has been on trial with Wednesday and is looking to impress Lee Bullen and earn himself a permanent contract at Hillsborough.

It's noted how the 20-year-old forward has been predominantly working with the club's under-23s, but he has also joined in with first-team training on occasion and bolstered the numbers available to Garry Monk.

Quiz: Do Sheffield Wednesday and Sheffield United have these 10 things in common?

As per Yorkshire Live, the last few weeks have seen Simmonds sporadically train with the Wednesday first-team.

Discussing Wednesday's next move with the forward, Bullen revealed to Yorkshire Live: "The jury is still out from our point of view. We are still talking to him. I think he enjoys it here and has settled into the group really well.

"But it is not just the case of bringing someone in for the sake of it. We are trying to pick the right ones for the group at the right age and we can see development in them.

"We will probably make a decision on him [Simmonds] this week. We will have a word with him and see if he wants to stay and have a look at Ipswich. If not, then we will speak to each other and the staff and make a decision on the lad."

In terms of breaking into the Wednesday first-team - should he sign - Simmonds might face an uphill task.

Jordan Rhodes remains on the books at Hillsborough, with Jack Marriott, Callum Paterson, Elias Kachunga and Josh Windass four further forwards brought in at Wednesday over the summer.

The Verdict

Judging by Bullen's comments, Wednesday would like to keep Simmonds. They've seen enough of the 20-year-old to allow him a chance with the first-team, which is a fairly big step for a player on trial.

However, agreeing something will require both parties to be on the same page.

Simmonds might well look at the squad at Wednesday and think his first-team chances are slim. If that's the case, he might be better off elsewhere.

It might come down to Wednesday making sure he knows that if he hits the heights expected of him, the first-team isn't a million miles away.
