It was a bad day for Sheffield Wednesday on Saturday after they fell to a 2-1 defeat to lowly Bolton Wanderers. The victory was the Trotters first in the league all season. To make matters worse, Jordan Rhodes was stretchered off late on with a bad looking injury.

The striker was seen leaving the Macron Stadium on crutches and wearing a protective boot and the initial fears were that Rhodes could face an extended period out. However, the news wasn't too bad for Wednesday, with the ex-Blackburn man ruled out for at least two weeks, according to the Sheffield Star.

With a quick run of fixtures, the Scotland international seems certain to miss the next three games. They are away to Derby on Saturday before successive home games against Barnsley and Millwall. A realistic return could be the trip to Aston Villa on November 4, although a two-week international break follows that, which could come at a very good time for Rhodes.

Playing time has been hard to come by for the striker, with Gary Hooper in superb form and Steven Fletcher preferred alongside him. After his £10m move from Middlesbrough things haven't gone to plan for Rhodes at all at Hillsborough. He has fallen to third choice this season and is still to register his first league goal of the campaign.

The Verdict

Despite his poor form since joining the club, Carlos Carvalhal would still rather Jordan Rhodes was an option from the bench. Although, with the way he left the pitch and the ground on Sunday, a two-week absence isn't as lengthy as many expected. It's now up to Lucas Joao to make the most of the increased opportunities he will find. For Wednesday, they need to get back to winning ways after Saturday's dismal showing.
