Sheffield Wednesday could be set to turn to former Wolves and Ipswich Town manager Mick McCarthy as their new manager.

According to Alan Nixon, McCarthy is keen on taking the role at Hillsborough should the Owls decide to part ways with the under fire Luhukay.

McCarthy has been out of work since leaving his role at Portman Road in the summer, and the experienced Irishman could well relish the chance of taking over the reigns at Hillsborough given the size of the club and the tough task ahead for the club.

The Owls succumbed to a fourth successive defeat yesterday as they were hammered by Norwich City at home 4-0, a result which left many Wednesday fans calling for Luhukay to be relieved of his managerial duties in South Yorkshire.

With a big Sheffield derby approaching at the end of this week, the Owls have a big decision and week ahead, with the club no doubt weighing up their options on what could be a crucial decsion.

McCarthy has plenty of experience at Championship level and is well regarded as someone who's old school thoughts and tactics could well be just what a club like Wednesday need at the minute.

The verdict

McCarthy certainly has the experience in the Champioship to be a success, but whether he could really turn things around at Hillsborough is another question.

He would be a safe pair of hands that's for sure, but would he be able to take the club much further forward than they already are? I'm not so sure.
