Sheffield Wednesday are still considering a wage deferral for their playing squad, as they weigh up their next option amid the extended postponement of EFL football.

The coronavirus outbreak has placed the Championship season on hold, with Wednesday's last fixture coming almost a month ago.

As per the Sheffield Star, Wednesday have placed several non-playing staff on the government’s furlough scheme, which sees them receive 80% of their salary. Dejphon Chansiri will cover the other 20%, however.

The same report reiterates that Wednesday are considering deferring the wages of their players, but no move has been made to do so at this stage.

Last week, Leeds United were one of the first clubs to take that step, with players and Marcelo Bielsa deferring their wage to allow others at Elland Road (non-playing staff) the opportunity to take home a full wage despite the fact the club aren’t benefitting from any matchday revenue.

Currently, football in the EFL is suspended until April 30th, but there is no concrete evidence that it will return straightaway, with the season now expected to spill into the summer months after Euro 2020 was pushed back 12 months.

The Verdict

Wednesday are right to weigh this decision up, but as their rivals begin to take action, you’ve got to expect that it’ll be the case at Hillsborough before long.

Of course, the people the club are looking to take care of are the non-playing staff, with it the view that many of the players can cope with a deferral.

Given payday for many has just passed, there’s no rush, which gives Wednesday time.
