Sheffield Wednesday are interested in a potential deal for striker Jayden Onen, a report from The Sheffield Star has revealed.

Onen is currently a free agent following his release from Reading upon the expiry of his contract at the end of last season.

Having joined the Royals back in November 2020, Onen, who was previously part of the youth setup at clubs such as Arsenal, Crystal Palace and Brighton, made two first-team appearances during his time at The Madejski Stadium.

Now it seems as though the 20-year-old could soon be handed the opportunity to make a return to the Football League.

According to this latest update, Sheffield Wednesday have identified Onen as a potential target, as Darren Moore looks to add to his side following the Owls' relegation from the Chamionship at the end of last season.

Wednesday though, may not be alone with their interest in the attacker. It is thought that fellow League One sides Doncaster and Wycombe have also shown interest in Onen, while it has been suggested that the 20-year-old could also have options in the Championship.

So far this summer, Sheffield Wednesday have completed three summer signings. Midfielder Dennis Adeniran and left-back Jaden Brown have arrived on permanent deals, while winger Olamide Shodipo has joined on loan from QPR.

The Verdict

This is an interesting one to consider for Sheffield Wednesday.

Onen's past playing history suggests he does have plenty of potential, and it does seem as though the Owls could benefit from adding to their attacking options.

The fact that he is available on a free also means this could help Wednesday from a financial perspective, so you can understand why this might be an appealing deal for the Owls.

However, the fact that Onen has barely been tested at senior level means there is no guarantee he will be able to make an impact for Darren Moore's side, so there would certainly be some risk associated with this deal.
