Carlos Carvalhal is looking to significantly strengthen his defensive options at Sheffield Wednesday this summer, with the Owls considering moves for Grant Hanley and Daniel Ayala, reports the Sheffield Star.

Wednesday are preparing for another season in the Sky Bet Championship, having missed out on a top-flight return in the play-offs for the second successive year, with Carvalhal looking to make significant additions to his squad over the summer.

Since Carvalhal’s arrival at Hillsborough, Glenn Loovens and Tom Lees have formed a solid base in central defence for the Owls, with Sam Hutchinson providing cover for the first choice duo.

It appears that Carvalhal is looking for added quality in central defence, with Newcastle United’s Hanley and Middlesbrough’s Ayala on Wednesday’s radar this summer.

Hanley cut a frustrated figure at St James’ Park last season, with Rafa Benitez preferring Ciaran Clark, Jamaal Lascelles and Chancel Mbemba to the Scottish international.

The 25-year old made just ten Championship appearances, but will demand a high transfer-fee, with four-years remaining on a lucrative contract at St James’ Park.

Ayala is another option Wednesday are considering, with the Boro defender also struggling for opportunities in the north-east last season – featuring in just 14 Premier League fixtures.

The 26-year old does have masses of Championship experience, and was part of the Boro side to achieve promotion to the top-flight during the 2015/16 campaign, when he featured in 35 league fixtures.
