According to the Sheffield Star, Sheffield Wednesday are targeting four of five new signings this summer, with Lee Bullen confirming the Owls will look to get their transfer business done early in the window.

Wednesday are preparing for another season in the Sky Bet Championship, after failing to gain promotion to the Premier League for the second successive year through the play-offs.

Carlos Carvalhal will now be looking to make the necessary additions to his squad to turn the Owls into a promotion outfit in the Championship next season.

A central defender is reportedly high on Carvalhal’s agenda, with Grant Hanley and Daniel Ayala both linked with a move to Hillsborough, to compete with Tom Lees and Glenn Loovens – the club’s only recognised centre-backs.

Despite the Owls’ play-off failure, first-team coach, Bullen, insisted an overhaul of the squad would not be necessary this summer, also confirming business would be done early by Carvalhal’s side, he said: “We want, in a perfect world, to get our business done early.

“If we make a few signings rather than a lot, then it doesn’t disrupt the stability of the group.”

Since his arrival at Hillsborough ahead of the 2015/16 campaign, Carvalhal has been supported by Wednesday’s owner, Dejphon Chansiri, in the transfer market.

Jordan Rhodes and Sam Winnall were two additions made during the January transfer window to bolster Wednesday’s attack, but defensive reinforcements are now needed following the end of the 2016/17 campaign.

Jose Semedo and Vincent Sasso have both left Hillsborough already this summer, leaving Carvalhal’s defensive options limited.
