Sheffield Wednesday are set to make a seventh signing of the summer transfer window with Swansea City midfielder George Byers heading to Hillsborough, according to YorkshireLive.

The 25-year-old will pen a deal with the Owls within the next 24 hours, although it's unclear whether it will be a permanent transfer or if Byers will be the fourth loan signing that Darren Moore makes.

Byers is equally adept in the attacking midfield role as he is in central midfield, and that is an area that Moore has strengthened heavily this summer with the additions of Wing and Dennis Adeniran.

The Swansea man will also compete for a place in Moore's 4-3-3 formation that has been used in pre-season, and he has experience in League One having played 14 times last season on loan for Portsmouth.

Byers played just once for Swansea last season in the FA Cup and has not featured for the club in the Championship since July 2020, and with the club being managerless right now it suggests that he is well down the pecking order at the Liberty Stadium.

The Verdict

There's still other areas of the pitch that Darren Moore seemingly needs to address - his strikers and left-back for starters - so bringing in another midfielder after signing Lewis Wing does seem slightly puzzling.

Maybe it was just too good of a deal to turn down though for the club and it will mean that the Owls have one of the best midfields in the whole division - that's if they didn't already with the likes of Barry Bannan and Massimo Luongo already at the club.

Byers will add even more creativity to the engine room and if Moore is planning on playing a 4-2-3-1 formation, then he may be the one to play in the '10' should he be called upon, and that's a role which could see Byers become one of the club's real goalscoring threats.
